A footwear system that estimates capillary refill time (CRT) continuously during everyday walking. The heel pressure of each step restricts blood flow and its release triggers a refill transient. The abstract demonstrates feasibility; the sensing modality and quantitative agreement are not stated in the abstract (ACM DL full text blocked, 403).

Abstract

Capillary Refill Time (CRT) refers to the time required for the skin to recover its color after pressure temporarily restricts blood flow and is then released. CRT is widely used in clinical settings as an indicator of peripheral perfusion and circulatory status, particularly in conditions such as dehydration, sepsis, shock, and hypothermia. Despite its potentials for versatile and accessible everyday health screening, CRT assessment is mostly confined to clinical settings, and extending it to everyday life introduces nontrivial challenges. We present CapWear, a footwear-based system that continuously estimates capillary refill dynamics during everyday walking. CapWear leverages the natural heel pressure generated during gait, which temporarily restricts blood flow and induces a capillary refill process. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of unobtrusive capillary refill monitoring through everyday walking, suggesting the potential of footwear as a platform for continuous peripheral perfusion monitoring in daily life.
