This study predicts apnea burden from PPG as a continuous value, then converts it to the apnea-hypopnea index to sort people into four severity groups. The authors tested whether PPG pulse-shape features help alongside SpO2, especially on out-of-distribution data. On that data, adding PPG features raised macro-F1 by about 16% and macro-accuracy by about 9% compared with SpO2 alone.
